The UK is welcoming a burst of spring warmth that looks set to last until the end of next week - with temperatures in some areas soaring into the 20s.

Largely dry conditions with plenty of sunshine are expected up and down the country from Sunday, March 30 until Sunday, April 6. During the eight-day stretch, high pressure - combined with a burst of south-easterly winds - will potentially bring temperatures as high as 23C by the end of the working week. Brits in the southeast will get the best of the warm blast, but areas in south-west Scotland, the West Midlands, and north-west England are also set for balmy conditions later on in the week.

Highs of 17-19C are predicted across the south at the start of the week, before rising to 20-23C by Thursday and Friday. It would make Britain will hotter than Ibiza, where maximum temperatures will only reach 16C next week. But areas in the north will also experience peak temperatures as the week progresses.

According to the Met Office, warm temperatures will stretch from the south right up to Scotland next week - where highs of 18C are predicted in Fort William, Craig and surrounding areas by April 3. Elsewhere in the region, temperatures will hover between 14C and 17C, lasting until at least Sunday April 6.

In its long-range forecast from Thursday April 3 until Saturday April 12, the forecaster says: "High pressure will often be centred to the north or east of the UK, maintaining relatively settled conditions much of the time. This should result in lengthy spells of dry weather, probably with a fair bit of sunshine at times, but also an ongoing risk of overnight frosts, especially where winds fall light.

"There is the chance of some low cloud or sea fog around some coastal areas. Daytime temperatures will tend to fluctuate depending on the wind direction, with potential for both rather warm conditions at times, but also cooler interludes. It may also be rather breezy, perhaps with some occasional showery rain attempting to push into some southern and western areas, especially later in the period."

Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick said: "We are going to see a short-lived spell of unsettled weather this weekend before we transition back towards a blocked weather pattern as high pressure builds on Sunday and dominates our weather through much of next week. While daytime temperatures will be warm next week, nights will still be chilly and there is still a chance we could see some rural overnight frosts under the clear skies."

In its forecast from April 1 the agency says: "From the start of April, settled weather is expected to cover much of the UK. Most places are expected to be dry with clear or sunny spells and light winds. Inland areas will see a general day on day warming next week. It will probably remain slightly cooler near coastal areas, with an additional risk of mist or sea fog affecting parts of the east coast."
